Chapter 2: Thoughts while I read
- He mentions that nearly half of the emails he receives are from women. (I will guiltily raise my hand at being one of those.) I think it’s because he feels so non-judgmental, so people feel comfortable contacting him.
- I like how he brings out that, ‘yes, the first step is hard. But so are the other steps too.’
- He says there’s no such thing as a balanced life. And I believe it’s true. Even in the original weekly schedule drawn up by God Himself, it’s ‘six days shalt thou labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work.’ I visited Germany once. Landed on a Saturday, and found out by hard experience that nothing was open on Sundays, so we had bare-bones meals. But it was nice to be in a place where rest is ‘forced’ on you. We went to parks and had time to visit with family and friends without the temptation of running to the nearest distraction.
- He says he’s advocating for people prioritizing themselves over others, sometimes, for their own mental and physical well-being. I am in full agreement with this one. A verse I grew up with says something along the lines of (in a list of what makes a good person), ‘he who sweareth to his own hurt,’ and I thought, ‘I don’t want to be hurt!’ Another verse popped into mind, ‘Swear not at all.’ And so, for the most part, I have been extremely cautious before blindly trusting people.
