Chapters 7 and 8: Thoughts While I Read
- To be honest, these two chapters were a little difficult to get through, even though I have heard the stories on his podcast before. They cover his injury and recovery, a loss of a friend/mentor by his own hand (and no one knew he even needed help), losing his mom through a relapse of cancer and what he did or didn’t do.
- I have had a prolonged hospital stay, after nearly losing my life during childbirth. It really is hard to try to convey what exactly you went through. The following two births were also C-sections. Thankfully, not as traumatic as the first, but the hospital staff were on standby.
- I have lost contact with friends along the way, found out that they took their own life, and thought, ‘Why didn’t they reach out for help if they needed? I would have dropped everything and came running.’
- My mom has recently been cleared of cancer now, but there were times when we weren’t sure. I was on the African continent at the time, and feel the agony of the decision to stay or drop everything and go home. Then COVID locked everything down, and thankfully, my mom is better now. But, man, it was difficult reading and hearing Andy’s regret.
All this to say, I highly recommend this book. There are questions that I’ll be sitting down with, a journal in hand.
Andy says he finds it easier to express himself speaking rather than writing. I find I’m great speaking one-on-one with people, but stick a microphone in my face and my mind goes blank. Once my fingers get started on the keyboard though… 😉
